Top workout songs

Last night while I was doing my last set of heavy kettlebell swings, I realised something very important : I can work out for longer if I’m listening to the right music.  For that reason, I thought I’d write a list of my current top workout songs.  Some people like listening to rock music while they’re working out.  Guess what type of music I like listening to from my list…

Eminem – Soldier.

How can this song not get you riled up for your next set?  “Never was a thug, just infatuated with guns.  Never was a gangster till I graduated to one”.  I can’t say I’ve ever done anything this song is actually about – I don’t carry a gun (even an unloaded one) and I’m not a thug.  I’ve also never beaten up a bouncer… have you ever SEEN a bouncer?  “I’m a lit fuse, anything I do, bitch, it’s news” – Can’t relate to this, either.  Great song, though.

50 cent – Places to go.

This song is amazing.  It takes me back to when 50 cent first got signed to Shady (a little while after How to Rob came out) and it’s still brutal.  This is a great song if you like you think about how you’re progressing while you’re working out, and song is generally about that.  “Picture me coming up, picture me rich from rap, picture me blowing up, now picture me going back to my momma’s basement to live, man, picture that”.  If you listen to this, you might start counting your sets like “1, I’m not going back to my momma’s basement to live!! 2, Yeah, I’m gonna bust my gat!! 3, ha haaaaaaaaaaaa (50 cent laugh)” – or is that just me?  erm.

Ludacris – Area codes.

I’m gonna let you in on a little secret.  Ready?  OK, here it is : My name is James & I don’t have hoes in different area codes.  I have a girlfriend and we live, with our little girl, in a nice house in a nice area.  Our neighbours are nice, and I use a slow cooker.  But guess what?  When I’m doing a victory dance after a set I didn’t think I’d get through, and I’m listening to this song, I have hoes in different area codes. Nobody except the late Nate Dogg will ever be able to sing  “Is it cause they like my gangsta walk?Is it cause they like my gangsta talk? Is it cause they like my handsome face? Is it cause they like my gangsta ways?” and have it sound cool.

T.I Feat. Justin Timberlake – Dead & Gone.

This song is soooo good and never gets any credit.  The best part of the video is JT playing the piano in the middle of the desert.  It makes no sense, and that’s why it’s the best bit.  Sort of makes me want to get a piano, too. “Maybe my homeboy would still be around had I not hit the sucker in the mouth that time”.  Hey, T.I, stop hitting your friends in the mouth.  It’s not big, and it’s not clever.  This song should come with a warning – if you listen to it with your headphones in the gym, you WILL end up singing the chorus by the end, and the girl you usually talk to at the water fountain WILL start avoiding you out of embarrassment.

Drake – Started form the bottom.

The last song on today’s list is this one.  I don’t even care that Drake really didn’t start from the bottom (he comes from a very privelaged background and was a child TV star).  I get it, and I forgive him.  “Just as a reminder to myself; I wear every single chain, even when I’m in the house”.  Fuck yeah.  Go on Drake, you wear your chains in the house.  Just keep making me music to work out to.

This was fun.  I’ll be writing more of these as I find new ones to listen to.

My top workout tracks are usually rave / dance tracks, old skool stuff like kisstory – I can always workout out to that, get a good beat from it especially when running, cycling or spinning
