It’s 11.39pm. I’m sat in my boxers at my computer, and I just got a message on Twitter asking for the best way to lose belly fat quickly.
It reads – “Hey!! How can I lose belly fat fast?”.
I have some bad news. There are no shortcuts to losing belly fat fast. I should know, I’ve looked HARD. Alas, shortcuts there are none.
Spot reduction is a myth.
By that, I mean reducing the amount of fat on a certain part of your body by exercising that part of your body excessively doesn’t work. So, doing a thousand crunches a day won’t do anything other than exercise the abdominal muscles that your fat is covering up. Crunches are a complete waste of time if you’re sole goal is to lose weight – don’t do them.
Count your calories.
Even if you don’t want to pursue a more super strict diet (like the LeanGains diet I’m currently on) you should still be counting calories. Don’t listen to people who tell you to “just eat healthily and listen to your body” because “listening to your body” is exactly what got you that tummy in the first place. Your body has no idea how much food it needs at this point. Humans are hunter-gatherers by nature, meaning thousands of years ago we’d be running around in forests trying to find a slow warthog to take a bite out of. When we eventually found that slow warthog, we’d eat the whole thing. There’s no magical “stop eating, you’ve had too much warthog and you might get a beer belly” signal built into our brains. Food is readily available and we can eat as much as we’d like nowadays, so we absolutely have to watch the volumes of food we’re eating. This is especially true if you’re trying to lose weight.
“Counting your calories” can be simple, or it can be complicated. If reducing body fat (and trying to lose belly fat quickly) is your only goal, this should be quite simple. Tally up how many calories you eat every day for a week, and take an average. Then reduce this daily average by 500 and stick to it. Religiously.
Don’t forget, your body can’t physically lose more than a lb or so of body fat a week, so anything more than that and you’re in danger of losing muscle-mass or just dehydrating yourself. Drink plenty of water, and have fun.
Don’t get sucked into the marketing hype.
I can tell you this from experience – pills don’t work. Well, that’s a lie. Some supplements do serve very specific purposes. Creatine is great for muscular endurance, for example. Cayenne pepper tablets will not help you lose weight faster. Don’t waste your money, they’re completely pointless. All they’ll do is give you a mild ‘tingly’ sensation when you start digesting the pepper. Oh, and they’ll make you look like a total idiot to your friends when you have to admit that they were right, the pills did absolutely nothing for you at all. The same rule applies for any “lose 10lbs in 10 days!” pill. Avoid like the plague.
Exercise for 30 minutes to 1 hour a day, 3x a week to begin with. Grab a few kettlebells and look up some basic exercises, or (I almost never recommend this) go to a gym and ask a trainer to help you put together a program. Any exercise is better than no exercise.
Put a plan together based on the above tips and I promise you now – you will drop some fat inside of 30 days. Weigh yourself at the beginning of the 30 days, and at the end. Hey presto, you’re losing weight.
Repeat for as long as you’d like.
